Me and My iPad

I just received my iPad from UPS today and while I haven’t had a ton of time to mess with it I want to share a few initial impressions with everyone.

First off I like to thank @MikeAtUPS for answering my question about whether UPS offered Saturday delivery in my area. I think that was a great example of a company using Twitter to help their customers. Although if they just offered a way on their website to check out if they service your zip code poor Mike wouldn’t have been inundated with questions in the last couple days.

Now on to the iPad. Picking up an iPad is a little bit of a shock. It feels heavier than it looks. The only real way to type any amount of text is to lay the iPad down on a surface because holding it with one hand and typing with the other is cumbersome. I can easily see people picking up cases that also act as stands.

Mobile Safari feels way faster on the iPad verses the iPhone plus you have a bigger screen. I have noticed that a couple sites are defaulting the iPad to the mobile version of their site. iGoogle was one of these, but at least they allow you to switch to the desktop version. I get the feeling that this is going to happen a lot over the next couple of months. What this means to us developer is that we need to be way smarter in how we build website from now on. The web feels like the wild west again and that’s exciting to me.

Now it’s off to play some Civilization on this puppy.
