We can't have nice things

Google Domains is being sold off to Squarespace.

Yesterday I discovered that Google no longer wants to manage web domains for normal people like you and me. But instead of pulling the plug they’ve decided to sell off that business to someone else - Squarespace.

I appreciate there is a plan to keep people’s domains from being lost, but I don’t understand why they are doing this. All the big names in cloud hosting offer domain registration and dns services. It’s table stakes. Maybe they weren’t making enough money, but sometimes you need to offer services that aren’t large profit drivers in order for the ones that do to seem more appealing.

My first issue with this whole thing is that they are going to transfer my payment information over to Squarespace. I choose to do business with Google, I did not nor will I do business with Squarespace. Not because I think they are an evil company, but because they offer a bad value proposition to me. It’s more expensive and offers fewer features that I care about or need.

And then there is the absolute lack of communication about this impending sale. I found all of this out from a Bloomberg article posted on Hacker News. No emails. No banner in the app. Maybe they’ll reach out when the deal is done, but I’m not going to wait that long. You’ve already shown that you are no longer interested in my business so I’m taking it elsewhere.

I hope Cloudflare treats me better.
